New vehicles unload 450 containers in 18 hours

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) Monday said 450 containers have been unloaded within 18 hours using the new vehicles.

MPL CEO Mohamed Junaid said that it has been 15 years since the last time new vehicles were brought in, and that unloading was taking using two older vehicles up until now. He said that most of the newly ordered vehicles had arrived and that they were in use now.

Junaid stated that 450 containers were unloaded within 12 hours and that 90 containers were loaded on to the ships. He said that this work used to take around 15 to 16 days previously.

"It has been 15 years since new vehicles were last brought in. The old vehicles suffer complications all of the time. These problems have now been largely resolved," Junaid said.

Around USD9 million (MVR140 million) was spent for the 22 custom built vehicles ordered by MPL from the famous Sunny Company of China.
