Maldives customs seizes over 20 spearguns

Maldives customs Wednesday busted a shipment of 21 spearguns brought illegally into the archipelago by a local company.

Customs service told reporters on Wednesday said the spearguns had been inside a dozen containers labelled garments brought in by a local company via a Dubai firm.

"We seized the guns after an intel report. The company normally imports electronics," Superintendent of customs Ahmed Faheem explained during the press conference.

Customs however did not name the firm and said no arrests have been made thus far.

Spearguns can only be imported into the Maldives under a special permit.
