Maldives prison bans outside items to curb contraband

Maldives correctional service has banned families from bringing in any outside items during inmate visits..

Items such as short eats and fast foods were previously allowed for family members for prison visits.

Correctional service spokesperson, Ahmed Lugman said such drastic measures had to be taken due to the recent increase in incidents of family members atempting to smuggle contraband into prison.

He said this move would limit the access of prisoners to contraband from the outside.

A family member visiting a prisoner last month had attempted to smuggle drugs hidden inside a cake.
