Opposition lawmakers to boycott pres parliament address

Main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) lawmakers would boycott president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's address to reconvene the parliament on Monday, MDP has said.

Some MDP parliamentary group members told Avas Sunday that the dire state of affairs in the archipelago has prompted opposition lawmakers to boycott the address similar to lat year.

"Given the political situation in this country, we cannot simply sit there and listen to what the president has to say. So like last year, MDP lawmakers will not attend the sitting tomorrow [Monday]," lawmaker Ali Nizar said.

Nizar said MDP has several amendments and laws to submit to the parliament this year but said there was slim hopes to pass the legislation through the government controlled parliament.
