Nasheed denies rift with ex-VP Jameel

Self exiled former president Mohamed Nasheed Saturday denied rumours of a rift with former vice president and opposition alliance leader Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed.

Jameel who had been granted political refugee status by Britain fled to the UK last July, days before he was impeached in a controversial vote which was alleged to have been orchestrated by his eventual successor Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Ghafoor who himself was impeached following a blast aboard the presidential speedboat.

The former VP has since been heading the opposition alliance Maldives United Opposition (MUO) from Britain.

Nasheed was jailed on terror charges after he was convicted and sentenced to 13 years in prison over the arbitrary detention of a sitting judge while he was president.

Nasheed now lives in self imposed exile in the UK after he was allowed to leave to Britain on medical leave in an internationally brokered deal in January last year.

However, rumours had been rife that Jameel and Nasheed had a falling out over the opposition candidate for the next presidential elections in 2018.

Nasheed speaking during a program on opposition aligned Raajje TV on Saturday denied the rift insisting that he meets the ex-VP in UK almost every week.

"There's no problem. I have a very close relationship with Jameel. I have the utmost respect for him," Nasheed said.
