MDP to hold chairperson polls Friday

Main Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has announced the decision to hold the elections to fill the vacant post of the party's chairperson on Friday.

MDP had said the elections originally scheduled for February 5 had been postponed by five days as the day was a working day which might prove difficult for voters.

MDP said the elections will be held on from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

The post was vacated after Ali Waheed living in self imposed exile in the UK resigned late November.

A leading member of former president Mohamed Nasheed's legal team and former youth minister Hassan Latheef was the sole candidate for the chairperson's post, which means the party would hold a referendum to elect Latheef to the post.

Latheef needs a minimum of 5,000 votes to secure the post.
