Maldives parliament accepts bill to mandate teachers to register

Parliament Wednesday accepted the government proposed education bill looking to mandate teachers to register before they are allowed to teach in the archipelago.

During the sitting on Wednesday, 69 lawmakers voted in favour with just one against. The bill had been immediately forwarded to a parliamentary committee for review.

The education law states that a special teachers registration council must be established within a month after the law comes into effect. The council within six months of its inception then must draft a regulation for registration of teachers.

The six member teachers registration council is mandated to come up with a system to maintain and monitor the professional standard of teachers.

The bill designed to provide equal education opportunity for all, also entails specific responsibilities for teachers, the government, parents and students.

According to the bill, the government must ensure equal higher education opportunities and establish an education system to include students with disabilities.

The bill also states that every child between the age of four and sixteen must attend school, while also specifying measures educators are allowed to adopt to discipline children.
