Govt lawmakers to thwart speaker no confidence move

Government lawmakers would unite to thwart the opposition led move to pass a motion of no confidence against parliamentary speaker Abdulla Maseeh, chief government lawmaker Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik said Wednesday.

Speaking after a ruling party parliamentary group sit-down with president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, Nihan insisted that the government controlled parliament would "fail" the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) led motion to oust the speaker.

MDP had made an unsuccessful attempt to push through a no-confidence motion against Maseeh backed by lawmakers from ousted ruling party leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's faction last year.

The Villi-Maafannu MP's comments suggested a fresh bid, but did not divulge any details.
