Speaker denies opposition claims behind censure motion

Parliament speaker, Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed on Monday denies all claims made by the opposition behind the censure motion, describing that they were false and baseless.

Responding to the motion during Monday's sitting ahead of the vote, Maseeh insisted in always abiding by the majority parliament decision in accordance with democratic principles and all fairness while striving to uphold the honor and integrity of the parliament. The motion by the opposition was delineated by the Speaker as baseless and completely unfounded.

“There are 85 Members of the Parliament and they must accept that the speaker’s decision will be made in accordance to the majority of the votes cast by the parliamentarians themselves as there had only been a few chances when I got to cast my tie-breaker vote. This is how democracy works and this is how all decisions to date have been made at the parliament," Maseeh stressed.

Speaker also denied to obstructing the submission of any bills and motions stating that he communicated with the chair of the relevant parliamentary committees after submission to ensure that the work was done swiftly.

The debate on speaker Abdulla Maseeh’s censure motion was ended ahead of schedule as only a few parliamentarians came forward to speak on the motion.

The vote on the historic motion is scheduled for 1:30pm

Maseeh was elected to the parliament as the MP from Fuvahmulah-South constituency, and was elected as the speaker on May 28, 2014 with 43 votes in his favour. Maseeh has been serving in the parliament since 2000.
