Thalassemia Hospital will offer bone marrow transport services, says health minister

The plans for the Thalassemia Hospital to be established in the Maldives include bone marrow transplant facilities, Health Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel has said.

Speaking at a ceremony to mark International Thalassemia Day on Wednesday, Minister Dr. Khaleel said President Dr. Muizzu's vision for the health sector included plans to establish a hospital dedicated to serving thalassemia patients. The hospital will become a renowned hospital in the region, he said, adding that the hospital would be developed such that bone marrow transplant services can be offered at the hospital.

Acknowledging the current difficulties in bone marrow testing, Minister Dr. Khaleel said that arrangements have now been made to conduct bone marrow testing in the Maldives until the establishment of the Thalassemia Hospital.

The minister further announced an increase in government-sponsored bone marrow transplants for this year, stating that the government would facilitate 10 additional thalassemia patients to receive bone marrow transplants abroad this year.
