Maldives urges a more 'forward-looking' SAARC

Maldives president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom Monday stressed that SAARC needs a more forward-looking approach to achieve their objectives and principles.

The new Secretary-General of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), Amjad Hussain B. Sial paid a courtesy call on president Yameen at the President’s Office. During the call, the president had expressed the imperative need to review economic cooperation within SAARC and hoped for maintaining and gaining further upward momentum under the leadership of the new Secretary-General.

President also highlighted on the viable opportunities through SAARC to enhance regional cooperation and integration in areas of mutual interest, expressing the need for an amicable agreement with regard to the SAARC process.

Amjed Hussain B. Sial has been appointed as general secretary since 1 March 2017. He is the first Pakistani to be elected and had worked at the SAARC Secretariat as the Director from Pakistan from 2003 to 2006.
