Govt resumes road repair in-front of JP camp

Government on Thursday resumes road repair directly in-front of the main opposition Jumhoory Party (JP) camp in the capital Male.

Housing ministry spokesperson Ahmed Fazal Hussain stated the repairs were resumed to ensure the quality of the roads were improved and vowed to complete the repairs as soon as possible.

While repairs of Fandiyaaru Magu have been resumed, 'Majeedhee Magu', the main road which runs through the middle of Male City, is currently in the fifth segment of construction. The road is set to be completed after construction is finished across all nine segments of the road.

Housing ministry initially started road repair in-front of JP camp on April 7 and had reopened it three days later.

The sudden repairs began as opposition protesters gathered outside the JP camp on Friday evening, following the arrest of JP leader and business magnate, Gasim Ibrahim.

Gasim had been taken into custody over recent allegations of bribing fellow lawmakers and making incitements to overthrow the government.

The business magnate however, was released by the High Court saying that his arrest was in violation of due procedure on Wednesday.

But the criminal court has now begun his trial on Thursday before refusing to remand the seasoned lawmaker until the end of the trial.
