HPA conducts mental health workshop for students

Health Protection Agency (HPA) has commenced a depression workshop aimed for secondary students.

Speaking at the ceremony of commencement, state minister of health Dr Aishath Rameela revealed that the workshop was aimed for students in their adolescence, and that it would cover the essentials of cognitive behaviour therapy and ways to cope with life's problems.

The one-day work shop was attended by a total of 40, which included 20 health officers from schools and 20 students.

Depression is the leading cause of ill health and disability worldwide. According to the latest estimates from WHO, more than 300 million people are now living with depression - an increase of more than 18 per cent between 2005 and 2015. Lack of support for people with mental disorders, coupled with a fear of stigma prevent many from accessing the treatment they need to live healthy, productive lives.
