ADK celebrates averting H1N1 epidemic

ADK hospital has celebrated the quick evasion and control of the H1N1 virus that was rapidly spreading around the Maldivian islands in early March.

The biggest private hospital located in capital Male held a ceremony at Champa Central Hotel on Monday night to recognise the efforts of all the individuals involved in combating the virus.

In the ceremony, which was inaugurated by the health minister Abdulla Nazim, ADK hospital awarded commemorative plaques to the doctors, nurses and all the health workers who were involved in the flu clinic that was set up by ADK to accommodate the growing number of patients.

While addressing the attendees of Monday’s celebration, the hospital’s managing director Ahmed Affal highlighted the hard work put in by all of ADK’s employees during the difficult time and thanked them for their incredible efforts. He had noted the special care and individual attention that was given to each patient by ADK’s employees during the crisis.

“We’re here to celebrate how ADK, and all the other hospitals and clinics in Male worked together to avoid a potential crisis and neutralise the situation,” Affal said.

According to Affal, ADK spent about MVR2.5 million on treating patients at its free flu clinic. The company believed that taking firm action on their own accord to avert the crisis was their responsibility, Affal added.

ADK ran the free flu clinic for nine days and saw 1,659 patients. From March 15 onwards, they have also been providing the public with the flu vaccine. So far, they have vaccinated 10,383 people.

During the course of the flu outbreak last month, ADK tested 65 people for the virus, and identified 28 people who were positive with the H1N1 virus.

During Monday’s ceremony, even the health minister had noted the level of professionalism maintained by ADK during the crisis, and said that it was a clear indication of the excellent preparedness of the health sector in Maldives for any situation. Further, Minister Nazim said that being able to work so smoothly with the private companies in times of national crisis shows that the health sector is also improving.
