Politicians must share blame for gruesome murders, insists pres

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on Sunday slammed opposition leaders saying that the incessant incitement for political strife must share the blame for the brutal murder of renowned local blogger Yameen Rasheed.

The 29 year old social media activist was found stabbed to death in the stairwell of a house in the capital Male around 3:00 AM on Sunday. He was rushed to state run Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) where he was pronounced dead shortly after.

Police had reported a total of 14 stab wounds on the victim’s body. The motive for the attack still remains unclear.

Speaking during the ceremony to mark the 125th Anniversary of the country's military, the president insisted that the hard-work of relevant state institutions to instill peace and stability in the archipelago are continuously undermined by opposition leaders calling for chaos.

"We're always hearing calls to confront law enforcement officials. So why are the politicians shirking away from sharing responsibility for this brutal murder," he stressed.

President Yameen also aimed a dig at law enforcement authorities highlighting their failure to find the perpetrators behind the similar murder of lawmaker Dr Afrasheem Ali and the disappearance of journalist Ahmed Rilwan.

Afrasheem’s body was discovered brutally stabbed to death in the stairwell of his home on October 2, 2012 while Rilwan, Maldives Independent reporter went missing over two years ago and despite an extensive investigation, his disappearance remains a mystery.

President Yameen however assured that the authorities, impeded by limited resources would continue efforts to bring criminals to justice.
