Ruling party earns highest state funds

Ruling party Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) is yet again the recipents of the largest sum of money allocated for political parties from the state budget.

The Election Commission (EC) said that the fixed state budget for political parties with membership of over 10,000 supporters is a fund of over MVR23 million.

EC, on Wednesday, sent all necessary documents to the finance ministry so that political parties will receive the allocated sum of money from the state budget for this year.

According to the political parties regulation, a total of 0.1 – 0.2 per cent of the state budget for each year should be allocated to registered political parties.

EC is mandated to distribute 40 per cent of this amount equally among all political parties registered at the time of distribution, and the remaining 60 per cent is to be distributed proportionally to the size of membership of each political party.

The Commission stated that this year, opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and ruling coalition Maldivian Development Alliance (MDA) and new opposition member Jumhoory Party (JP) will be receiving a sum from the state budget.
