Maldives downplays UK terror warning

Maldives' police jointly with the military have downplayed a United Kingdom (UK) warning of a possible terror attack in the archipelago.

The government of UK, via a travel advisory, warned their citizens of heightened threat of terrorist attacks in places frequented by foreign travellers which includes tourists and expats. UK further advised their citizens to be vigilant at the time of travel.

According to the travel advisory, the threat of terrorist attacks is sparked by motivation from the conflict in Iraq and Syria that are globally against UK interests.

Maldives authorities however denied an imminent threat but said the entire world was in danger from terrorism.

"But Maldives is no more at risk [terror attack] than any other country," an official said.

A former local diplomat told Avas that the UK travel advisory was not exclusive to the Maldives had been prompted by the recent Manchester attack that had left 22 people dead.
