Over 360-hectares of new land reclaimed, housing minister reveals

During president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s presidency, land in 12 islands have been reclaimed, housing minister Dr Mohamed Muizzu revealed on Wednesday.

According to the housing minister, approximately MVR 1.7 billion has been spent so far on land reclamation of these 12 islands.

Further, Dr Muizzu revealed that a total of 360-hectares of new land has been created through reclamation – excluding the land that was reclaimed in the second phase of the Hulhumale development project.

In an effort to protect the newly reclaimed land, over 10.7 km of revetments have also been established around its perimeter, the minister said.

Dr Muizzu was summoned to the parliament on Wednesday by Kimbidhoo MP Abdulla Riyaz for questioning regarding the land reclamation project in Hirilandhoo in Thaa Atoll.

Dr Muizzu had said that reclamation of the island is not possible this year as it was not included in this year’s annual budget.
