Expat smuggling 7kg of cannabis, caught

Customs has seized over seven kilos of drugs from a 26 year old Bangladeshi expat.

Customs said over seven kilos of drugs were found on the smuggler, who was searched at the Maldivian airport for appearing suspicious.

Upon checking the man, the drugs were discovered in six plastic bowls that were taped shut and hidden in a box in possession of the expat.

The drugs were later tested and confirmed to be cannabis with a weight of 7.2 kg.

Customs had seized drugs worth of MVR 5.5 million earlier in May.

The penalty for smuggling drugs into the Maldives is life imprisonment and a fine of between MVR 100,000 and MVR 1 million.
