Slain blogger's family send 454 letters to HRCM

Slain blogger Yameen Rasheed’s family has submitted 454 letters to the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM), insisting justice for the

In a statement that was released after submitting the letters, his family revealed that they requested the commission to look in to police’s potential negligence in investigating numerous death threats the victim had received before his gruesome murder.

Further, his family had urged the human rights watchdog to be more heedful in investigating Yameen’s case and to be more proactive in taking action against the blatant acts of violence and hate crimes that has increased as of lately.

HRCM has not responded to the letters at the time of going to press.

On May 2, the blogger’s father had sent 800 letters to the police, urging them to hasten the investigation.

This move was followed by filing a civil lawsuit that claimed that the police failed to investigate the death threats that were reported by Yameen prior to his death. Renowned lawyer Husnu Suood had represented the family in the case, and said that the police was liable in Yameen’s murder as they failed to provide protection for the victim despite the repeated threats.

In the latest update on the blogger’s murder, the police last week boldly declared that they have apprehended all key individuals involved in the murder of Yameen.

They said that they have built a sold case with enough evidence to prosecute the alleged assassins.

The investigation team is preparing the final work on the case files to be forwarded for prosecution in order to make an ironclad case against the perpetrators they have caught, the police said last week.

Yameen was murdered over a month ago, and Maldives' large social media community was shaken by the brutality of what had happened.

According to Yameen’s family, he was stabbed over 16 times in the neck, head and the face at around 3am in his own home’s stairwell.

Many of his friends and well-wishers regularly gathered at Artificial Beach in Male to show solidarity.

Last month, the police had arrested a lawyer claiming that he was "obstructing the investigation" of the slain blogger; however the lawyer was later transferred to house arrest.

The police already had a total of eight people in custody in connection to the case in mid-May.

They also slapped travel bans on several other people who are believed to be connected to the gruesome murder of the blogger.

Further, they had also sent forensic evidence abroad to be analysed by foreign experts. This move came after the victim’s family had urged the police and the government to seek foreign aid in the investigation.

The police identified suspects involved in the murder through a series of CCTV footage and had officially announced a manhunt.
