Three members appointed to LGA board

The parliament on Tuesday, approved the three members nominated by president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to the Local Government Authority (LGA) board in accordance with the seventh amendment to the Decentralisation Act.

The president’s nominations for LGA’ board were Minna Rasheed from Nilandhoo in Faafu atoll, who has a background in gender studies, Ahmed Hassan of Hithaadhoo in the southernmost Addu atoll and Amir Ali of Kanduhulhudhoo in the southern Gaafu Alif atoll.

Minna and Amir Ali received 49 votes in favour, whilst Ahmed Hassan received 48 votes in his favour.

The parliament’s National Security Committee had evaluated the president’s choices for the LGA board, and that report was also presented to the parliament floor by the chair of the committee, Guraidhoo MP Ibrahim Riza.

Recently, many changes were brought to the Decentralisation Act with all powers to appoint members to the LGA board being conferred to the president. Further, an amendment was passed so that no island councillor can be represented in the LGA board.
