STELCO celebrates 20 years of service

In 1949, during Ibrahim Nasir’s presidency, a 14-kilowatt engine was established in Male to provide power for its citizens.

This was the beginning of a steady power supply to the capital; however, this post-war establishment was not modernised until June 19, 2007 when the government founded the State Electric Company (STELCO).

Today marks 20 years since STELCO began proving its services to the country. Since it was established in 2007, the company has expanded, and it now operates five powerhouses in Male, while it runs powerhouses in 30 different islands across the Maldives.

The state-run electric company operates a total of 35 powerhouses in the country.

STELCO’s management have worked tirelessly to improve its services throughout the years. In this spirit, late in May, a new eight-megawatt generator that was provided by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) was established, and its test-runs were instigated by the environment minister Thoriq Ibrahim.

Further, STELCO had also revealed plans of establishing more generators that can generate up to 76,000 kilowatts of energy, in an effort to cater for the growing demand for electricity.

Early in June, STELCO got a new managing director – Ahmed Zuhoor, who was a minister at the president’s office.
