Teacher's sacking over niqab sparks outrage

Jammiyatul-Salaf - a local organization of scholars on Islamic faith and practices - has condemned the sacking of a teacher for wearing niqab (face veil).

The religious association had voiced their frustration over sacking of teachers or individuals who abide to the Islamic conduct for women's attire.

A press statement released by the association had noted the recent sacking of several teachers by the education ministry for wearing the niqab under the pretext of "being unable to identify in social environments", adding that the reason was "biased and shallow".

Salaf had urged the government to relax the dress code to accommodate civil servants and employees who attend their work place in abayas or niqabs.

Salaf had also strongly criticized the work place discrimination such individuals face by their employers and coworkers - additionally mentioning such insolence is blasphemy and going against Islamic teachings and principles.

The scholars' association had furthermore explained the importance of introducing an "Islamic work environment" segregating male and female coworkers - thus avoiding unnecessary interaction, which they had also reasoned out as a possibility to eliminate sexual harassment and discrimination between genders.

A person's faith or practice should not become the reason for being subjected to social and workplace discrimination - which is also a direct violation of the rights granted to citizens under the constitution.

Salaf highlighted the numerous and valuable contributions such teachers who had been sacked over their attire, had provided to the academics and the field.
