Rohingya Muslims are humans, Maldives condemns Myanmar

Permanent Secretary to United Nations from Maldives and the Maldivian Ambassador to US has strongly condemned Myanmar and the Burmese government over the mass genocide on the Rohingya Muslims.

He stressed that the Burmese authorities should treat the mistreated and antagonized Rohingya Muslims at Rakhine state as human beings.

The UN Permanent Secretary voiced his strict objection through a tweet in which he stated that before questioning the citizenship of Rohingya Muslim minority, the Burmese government should first acknowledge that they too are human beings.

UN's Refugee Agency confirms about 270,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled Myanmar and gained entry into Bangladesh. Several Muslims from the Rohingya have been reported to have fled from Myanmar over fears of strict persecution.

For years the Rohingya minority has faced humiliation and injustice at the hands of Burmese government and authorities, which has a Buddhist majority and rule.

While the Rohingya claim they are Myanmar citizens, authorities and the state has refused to acknowledged them as their own.

The recent outburst of mass killings and genocide comes as a result of military crackdown led by a rebel group formed of Rohingya youths who assaulted several camps of Myanmar's police and army. Approximately 12 soldiers were reported to be killed during the face off.

Myanmar military's retaliation resulted in the deaths of 80 rebel fighters, while several non-Muslims living in Rakhine state were evacuated from the location the following day. This lead to a mass massacre of Rohingya Muslims in lock-down within Rakhine.

While the Burmese army has blazed several shelters and abodes of Muslim settlers in Rakhine and killing thousands, the authorities have reiterated their counter retaliation was aimed at the rebel fighters exclusively.
