President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on Monday urged senior figures of the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) to resolve differences with the government internally.
Speaking after inaugurating a nation-wide sports festival dubbed 'Y18 Sports Fiesta' organized by PPM on Monday evening, president Yameen insisted that the ruling party must remain on the "same page" with the government.
"If the party council is unhappy with some of the government policies, than the ministerial cabinet will meet with them [council members] and explain it. And even the president would be more than happy to meet with the council and answer any questions they may have over some of our decisions or policies," president explained.
When the party fails to resolve such issues internally, it throws question marks over the party's unity and in turn threatens the future of the party, Yameen added.
President's comments comes in the wake of several top PPM figures including some lawmakers had expressed discontent over the recent awarding of flats under a social housing scheme.
The government's refusal to publicize the names of the recipients has come under heavy criticism both from the opposition and the public, leading to accusations of corruption and undue influence.
