ACC mulls action over social flat scandal

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) would "discuss" whether to take any action against the housing ministry for publicizing the final list of the people who had been awarded flats under a social housing scheme.

ACC had stepped in after the ministry refused to reveal the names and details of the recipients. The ministry said it was cooperating with the ACC, but had publicized the final list before the probe had been concluded.

Housing ministry has come under intense criticism for its refusal to publicize the names of the recipients with the housing minister Dr Mohamed Muizzu's weak attempt to justify the decision sparking more outrage.

Muizzu during a press conference on Monday said the decision to only publicize the application form numbers of the recipients was taken to "protect their rights."

The government's refusal to publicize the names of the recipients has come under heavy criticism both from the opposition and the public, leading to accusations of corruption and undue influence.

ACC chief Hassan Luthfee said no decision has been taken thus far over the publicizing of the final list of flat recipients.

"We are still investigating the complaint. And we're yet to decide on what to do with the latest development. But we're discussing the matter even now," Luthfee said.

The parliamentary government oversight committee has also taken the initiative to look into the scandal. The housing ministry had reportedly shared a more detailed list of flat recipients with the parliamentary committee.
