Police intervention if necessary for JP leader's arrival; Corrections

Maldives Corrections Service has confirmed that a conclusive decision in extending Jumhoory Party leader Qasim Ibrahim's medical leave abroad has not been made yet.

While Corrections granted an extension of additional 7 days to the initial 10-day medical leave abroad, the leave expires on Monday, October 2.

A media officer of Corrections had confirmed that Qasim Ibrahim, who is also the Villa Group head has not been officially granted any more extensions for his medical leave following the already granted 7 day period. He also stressed that Corrections would seek the assistance of Maldives Police Service should the JP leader flee from returning to Maldives after the medical leave period.

He also added that while Corrections would inquire assistance from authorities, they had not formally placed any requests to Maldives Police Service in flying Qasim Ibrahim to Maldives.

Villa Group head's advocates confirm that post the medical leave of 10 days he made preparations to fly back to Maldives. However he was unwittingly held back as Singapore Airlines had not given permission to board flight due to his medical condition.

Qasim Ibrahim's travel document also suggests that he can travel exclusively by Singapore Airlines only.

The Jumhoory Party leader following a successful heart surgery was attempting to board flight on Sunday however he was recommended by doctors to refrain from traveling until he ailing condition waned.

Qasim Ibrahim was sentenced to jail for a term of 3 years 2 months and 12 days of being found guilty with grafting lawmakers during the no-confidence motion of parliament speaker Abdulla Maseeh.
