Parliament approves 2 members to commissions amid protests

Parliament sitting on Tuesday has proceeded ahead in approving names of two individuals to vice president's position to two government led commissions.

Pro-government lawmakers had voted in favor of appointing both Shaheed Mohamed, Vaijeheyge, Gaaf Alif Vilingil and Mohamed Zahid, Dhaftar No: RS 1548, Male' as vice presidents to Civil Service Commission (CSC) and Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) respectively.

Shaheed, who was approved to the vice presidency designation of CSC already is a member of the commission. His name found parliament's approval through 26 votes from the 46 present at Tuesday's session.

Minimum votes required in the approval of individuals for government assigned commissions and entities is 14.

Meanwhile the second approval of Tuesday's seating, Zahid as the new vice president of HRCM already fills member position of the commission. His name was approved with a total of 27 votes, while Zahid has been approved as the new vice president of HRCM he had filled the designation during the debut term of the commission.

Both vote sessions were carried out amid loud chants and tirades from the opposition who had continued with their usual bantering against parliament speaker Abdulla Maseeh.
