Home Minister's duty exacts with an 'iron' will; Umar

Former Home Minister Umar Naseer has stated the designation of a Home Minister should be filled by someone with an 'iron' will and adhere to strict conduct.

While speaking to Avas Online, Naseer poked indirect jabs at incumbent Home Minister Ahmed Azleen over the rise in crime and criminal activities in recent months.

Naseer highlighted that the responsibilities of a Home Minister includes the initiation of crackdown on criminal offenses of all sorts and challenge the threats and pressures presented by active gangs and criminals while properly countering them. He added that such a minister should have a strong will and must be a force to reckon with, hinting that an idle and sluggish approach of action would not prove constructive.

The former Home Minister said the absence of such characteristics and traits in a Home Minister can lead to the situation Maldives is currently witnessing in terms of the rising crime tide.

He also said that during his tenure, he actively countered the criminal activities and criminals without considering their name and status resulting in a retaliating pressure from the gangs on state, pitting Naseer to act with 'one hand tied'.

"Even so, I had reduced the criminal activity in Maldives" he said.

During his tenure as Home Minister, Umar Naseer had implemented and acted on the Moni-Com Act which placed hardened criminals who were slipped through the law being spread too thin, under surveillance. In addition to this, he initiated a program of educating and training minors ranked under local gangs.
