VIA set to welcome famous international franchises

It had been months since those who ported the Velana International Airport (VIA) witnessed a set of steel frameworks getting welded into a structure - initially the first thing people would come across was a large portion of the harbor area being built.

But now the structure had gotten a proper framework and although it is a long way from getting completed, still looks promising and oddly beautiful.

The set of 'leaves' with the roof forming a 'wave' is dubbed the "International Franchise" building; and for good reason.

"The place looks beautiful, what is this place?" a tourist who witnessed the structure questioned.

The "International Franchise" building as the name suggests will become the housing unit for famous international brands who are all set to sail across their respective homelands and deliver service for the thousands and thousands of visitors to the international airport; locals and expatriates included.

World renowned brands like McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), Starbucks and even Hard Rock are set to grace the Maldivian archipelago; specifically at the Velana International Airport while Pizza Hut, Domino's, Krispy Kreme and Dunkin' Donuts are among the brands that would join as well.

Maldivians, already enthusiasts of food and such international franchises would adorn these high profile brands as they make their way into the local economy.

The franchise building is constructed to accommodate more than 300 customers simultaneously, at an area of 14,000 square feet.

The building's steel framework was designed and constructed by a Singapore company. The "International Franchise" building will house an area of 231 square feet to operate a 'Coffee Shop' while another 80 square feet is build as a donut stand.

Similarly a space of 302 square feet is designated for casual dining with 171 square feet area specialized for a fast food restaurant concept. The building also boasts a 99 square feet area for serving pizza for customers with another 14 square feet of space exclusive for ice-cream vendors.

An official of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) that operates VIA, said "the construction work is progressing at a swift speed. We are aiming to open the fast food restaurant area by December of this year."

He also mentioned that at least four international restaurant brands are set to establish business under the franchise building.

While VIA is set to welcome a large line of international franchises, the international airport already houses some esteemed businesses in the form of Burger King, The Coffee Club, Thai Express, Dairy Queen and The Pizza Company.
