Maldives awards mega housing project to China firm

Maldives government has awarded the recently announced mega housing project in the reclaimed suburb Hulhumale to a prominent China firm, according to Chinese media reports.

Incumbent president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom last week had launched the MVR6.6 billion (USD434 million) project designed to build 16 towers, 25 storey high to house 7,000 units. President Yameen had invited the youth from across the archipelago to come to the greater Male region which according to him would house 100,000 people.

According to China's Xinhua, the mega project had been awarded China Construction Third Engineering Bureau Co., Ltd.

"We have won the contract with our strong design and construction capacity. We also highlighted environmental protection in housing designs and won recognition of local firms," said Li Wenduo, director of the company's design academy was quoted by Xinhua.
