China firm handovers 1,500 housing units to Maldives govt

China construction firm China Machinery Engineering Corporation on Monday officially completed and handed over the 1,500 housing units constructed in eight different islands across the archipelago to the Maldives government.

CMEC had constructed 704 units in the reclaimed suburb Hulhumale, 264 in Seenu Atoll Hithadhoo island, 48 in Hulhu-Meedhoo, 200 in Gnaviyani Atoll Fuvahmulah, 52 in Gaaf Alif Atoll Villingili island, 50 in Gaaf Dhaal Gadhdhoo island, 120 in Thinadhoo island, 22 in Madaveli island and 40 in Hoadedhdhoo island.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, housing minister Dr Mohamed Muizzu said the units would be more spacious than the ones constructed under the social housing schemes of previous governments.

"We will continue to build similar or better standard housing units throughout the country even in future," the minister exclaimed.

Muizzu also said the government would fulfill its electoral pledge of easing the housing shortage in the country.
