Five charged over Hulhumale double death

Prosecutors on Tuesday charged five people over the sudden death of a young man and woman in the reclaimed suburb Hulhumale in September.

Ahmed Haameen, 21 and Fathimath Sama, 18 were rushed to hospital during a birthday celebration where they were pronounced dead shortly after.

According to the Prosecutor General's (PG) office, the five believed to be friends of the victims have been charged with wrongful death due to negligence.

PG office said the five charged include three men and two women.

Police had earlier arrested the four who were reportedly with the victims during the celebrations but were released shortly after saying that "they were no longer needed" for the investigation.

Police had confirmed that party drugs were found near the beach where the victims along with friends were celebrating a birthday. Initial reports indicated that Haameen had collapsed while playing football at the beach while Sama who was found floating near the swimming track had drowned.

However, police later refuted the initial reports, hinting that the party drugs could have been the cause.
