Customs seizure of pork and alcohol from Villa resort to court

The case of Maldives Customs Service confiscating alcoholic products from Villa's Fun Island resort without proper warrant has been lodged at court.

The advocate representing Villa Resorts in the case, Hisan Hassan asserted that the case was filed at Criminal Court for the misuse of court warrant by Customs authority and also filed a reclaim order on the confiscated alcoholic products from the resort.

Criminal Court has accepted the case from the plaintiff's side however it has not proceeded into trial.

According to Hassan, both Maldives Customs and Police Service raided the Villa Group resorts under a warrant to inspect and monitor while Customs had proceeded to confiscate the products without a warrant pertaining to it.

Furthermore Customs authority had placed distinctive labels on several alcoholic beverages they inspected from Fun Island and prohibited the resort from using any of it for sales.

The new Criminal Procedure Act clearly cites the chain of command and order in dealing with cases such as this, which seemed to have been breached by Customs authority.
