One of the deposed parliamentarians, according to Elections Commission, has criticized the government initiated move of dispatching Maldives Customs and Police Service to raid and confiscate specific products from Villa Group resorts.
Villa Resorts are a daughter company of the Villa Group which is owned by the Jumhooree Party leader Qasim Ibrahim who is currently in Germany seeking medical attention after he fell seriously ill during his trial and the preceded jailing.
According to the said deposed parliamentarian, Ilham Ahmed of Dhan'gethi constituency, the actions by the government would not only prove fatal to the business of one specific individual but to the entire hospitality industry as a whole.
MP Ahmed noted that the influential and biased conduct against Villa Resorts could end with the country facing severe setbacks on the long run.
The abrupt raids of multiple resort properties of Villa Group had sparked anger and frustration from opposition and several activists sympathizing the opposition's cause. Meanwhile both former presidents Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and Mohamed Nasheed condemned the act.
