Yumna Maumoon, sister of arbitrarily detained lawmaker of Dhiggaru constituency Ahmed Faris Maumoon has requested a meeting with chief judge of High Court regarding his case proceedings.
In her letter to High Court's judge, Yumna Maumoon had stated that his brother, Faris Maumoon has been in detention for six months with case appealed in July 2017. She also noted that while 2 months have elapsed since the appeal hearing, no substantial conclusions have been derived by the court over the case.
The former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's daughter had also highlighted High Court's negligence to respond to 17 letters signed and sent by the detained lawmaker.
Due to rising concerns and complains from Faris Maumoon's family, his sister had requested an appointment with Abdulla Didi, the chief judge of High Court to discuss about the lawmaker's case details and proceedings.
While it has been a little over six months since the lawmaker was arbitrarily detained, one of his advocates Maumoon Hameed had also expressed his concerns relating to the case. He had stated that Maumoon had lodged seven cases at High Court, all of which had not been assigned to relevant authorities for research - adding that these cases have been stalled for more than 100 days since it was initially lodged.
Hameed had described his client had seemingly exhausted his options for a proper trial but to no avail.
Furthermore Hameed noted High Court's prioritizing of appeal cases of detention and incarceration with the only exception being Faris Maumoon's case, implying the impartial approach of the legislative body towards Hameed's client.
The last hearing on graft charges against Faris Maumoon was held on Thursday, last week. The hearing mainly involved the 23 clauses presented from defendent's side on the graft-case.
Gayoom's son, Faris Maumoon is charged by the state for bribery during the no-confidence motion of parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh. State claims Maumoon is guilty of grafting several parliamentarians to sway their support to opposition's favor.
Since then the lawmaker has been in detention until his case is concluded while a conclusive hearing on Maumoon's appeal has been postponed without a scheduled date.
