Government on Tuesday announced its decision to bring down utility price in the Atolls to match the price in the capital Male.
Environment minister Thorig Ibrahim during a press conference said the higher water and electricity prices in the islands in comparison to the capital has been a long standing concern of the people.
The reduced prices would come into effect for households in the domestic category for usage between 0-400 units.
The minister said the price reduction would benefit 85 percent of the population. Though the electricity price cut would come into effect from March this year, the reduced rate for water would be in effect from this month.
Thorig said the government was striving to provide utility services at affordable prices to the public and hailed the new development as a major stride towards its goal.
