Ex-VP lifts lid on Sheikh Imran's jailing

Jailed former vice president Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Ghafoor has made serious allegations against his former boss president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom seemingly lifted the lid on the jailing of religiously conservative Adhaalath Party (AP) leader Sheikh Imran Abdulla.

Imran was sentenced to 12 years in prison for inciting violence during a major opposition protest held in May 2015. Prosecutors blamed the violence and destruction of property on a speech delivered by Imran during the protest.

Adheeb who himself was later jailed for 33 years on multiple counts of terrorism and corruption including an attempt to assassinate president Yameen in a statement alleged that the violence and clashes with the police had been orchestrated by his former boss.

The former VP said the president had plotted to remove Sheikh Imran from the political landscape soon after the coalition government which included Adhaalath Party (AP) ended and had exploited the May Day protest to do away with a political rival.

Adheeb said if given the chance he was ready to testify before a court of law and reveal the truth behind the unjust jailing of Sheikh Imran.

In July last year, Adheeb had also has sent a letter to the country's top court expressing his wish to reveal the truth behind the hand gun found former defence minister Mohamed Nazim's residence.

Nazim was sentenced to 11 years in prison after he was convicted of weapons possession after police found a hand gun in his residence. However, neither his DNA nor fingerprints was found on the weapon.

The Supreme Court however, upheld the verdict of the High Court despite DNA recovered from the pistol that matched Adheeb's DNA profile, who is currently serving 33 years for multiple accounts of terrorism and graft.

Nazim has argued that since his DNA was not found on the gun, there was enough room to cast doubt over his conviction continuing to claim that he was framed.
