Prez urged MP Faris Maumoon's arrest: Spokesperson

President's Office Spokesperson Ibrahim Muaz Ali has confirmed the incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom had ordered the arrest on his nephew, lawmaker Ahmed Faris Maumoon, from government authorities.

Dhiggaru constituency parliamentarian Faris Maumoon was released from his six month arbitrary detention on Thursday after Criminal Court judge Ali Adam ruled that due to the prolonging state of his bribery case, keeping him detention until the case concluded would be violation of Maumoon's basic human rights.

Additionally the Criminal Court who heard the latest of the case on Thursday ruled that since Maumoon had requested for foreign forensic analysis on the evidence presented by the state, the case would be unprecedentedly prolonged and thus granted the release after he was conditioned three ultimatums.

Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's elder son, Faris Maumoon was ordered to present himself to the court upon summoning, refraining from contaminating the evidence and acquiring prior permission before leaving town.

Meanwhile Faris Maumoon has claimed the current Commissioner of Police Ahmed Areef had warned him of his uncle President Yameen's intention of jailing him once again. According to Maumoon his uncle had ordered the local Police Service to arrest MP Maumoon.

Police had accessed Faris Maumoon's residence, Maafannu Snow Rose on the afternoon of Saturday, over claims of collecting evidence on possible conspiracy to overthrow the government - which authorities hinted had MP Maumoon's involvement.

President Office Spokesperson had defended Yameen Abdul Gayoom's apparent order to arrest Faris Maumoon, when he tweeted stating that President Yameen is the highest authority to order rule of law and he had simply urged relevant authorities to follow the lawful court order, presumably released prior to the Saturday's events, and uphold it.

Authorities claim the search warrant was issued MP Maumoon's alleged involvement in the said conspiracy and in order to collect evidence regarding it.

The court warranted search order lasts for a 12 duration, while Faris Maumoon's father Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's residence was also searched by authorities.

Gayoom had criticized this by stating that the search and inspection of Endherimaage (Gayoom's Male' residence) clearly violated the order cited on the search warrant.
