'Govt will not detain anyone unlawfully'; MP Abdul Raheem

Progressive Party of Maldives' deputy leader and Fonadhoo constituency lawmaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla claims the incumbent state will not arrest or detain any individual without probable cause or proof.

Abdulla's tweet on Saturday said that no one stands above law and the constitutional rights do not favor anyone over others based on their political affiliations or family ties. He also stated the era of nepotism and favoring is past and the current state will uphold rule of law regardless of a person's family background or political ties.

PPM's deputy leader praised incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom claiming the current administration does not impede the legislative bodies of the country and neither does it influence courts and authorities to make arrests or detentions of specific people for personal motives.

Abdulla emphasized the transparency and just nature of President Yameen's administration which acts equally towards everyone.

Though Abdulla did not make it certain through his tweet, it is believable that his taunt was directed at former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and his lawmaker son Ahmed Faris Maumoon.

Meanwhile the Dhiggaru constituency lawmaker Faris Maumoon was once again cuffed and brought under police custody on late afternoon of Saturday on charges of attempting to overthrow the government and bribing parliamentarians during no-confidence motion of parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh, to sway favor to opposition's cause.

Maumoon received conditional release on Thursday from the court and he was ordered to present himself at the court upon summoning. His bribery case is still pending with an official hearing still looming while Maumoon had filed for appeal on his detention at High Court, of which the hearing is still unscheduled.

Faris Maumoon has already been transported to Dhoonidhoo penitentiary.

Police had conducted search and inspection through a court warranted order on both Snow Rose (Faris Maumoon's residence) and Endherimaage (Gayoom's residence) claiming both venues are associated with the lawmaker and could hold important evidence regarding his alleged involvement to overthrow the government.
