Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has harshly criticized opposition's move of filing a constitutional case at Supreme Court to remove incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom from power.
Deputy leader of PPM Abdul Raheem Abdulla claims the opposition's is attempting to remove President Yameen from power because of fears of losing the 2018 presidential elections.
"Their attempts to overthrow President Yameen's administration is not rooted in their love for the country of its people. Their motive is rooted in their lust for power and personal gain, the opposition is the true enemy of this nation," said Abdulla.
The opposition alleges Yameen Abdul Gayoom's corruption and embezzlement of state funds. Opposition has also charged President Yameen of misusing parliament majority to strip people's rights.
Opposition had requested in their case to top court to formulate a special team to probe President Yameen's corruption and misconduct while to remove him from designation and power while they had sought top court to rule an impeachment on the head of the state as he is temporarily unfit to run the government.
The opposition filed case also requested Supreme Court to assign presidential responsibilities to Vice President under Article number 117 of Maldives Constitution.
The clauses for President's removal from office followed through Article number 100 of the Constitution. The Article number cites scenarios and criterion to present formal request to remove a head of the state from power.
