Prez claims Police must uphold court order, not question it!

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom said on Monday, Maldives Police Service officers should fulfill their responsibilities fully detached from political ideologies and favoritism.

The Maldives head of state asserted that should the officers of police department astray from upholding their unbiased conduct, it should be the President's duty to address it to them effectively.

While addressing his supporters and ruling party members at Progressive Party of Maldives' (PPM) prominent 'Rumaalu-2' camp on Monday night, President Yameen said that police authority must uphold transparency and nondiscriminatory conduct towards everyone.

However, President added that the officers of the authority must abide to the Constitution and established laws while performing their duties, finally addressing on the topic of implementing court orders.

"Should we forget these fundamentals, then it is necessary for us to remind them of it," President Yameen said referring to the importance of a country head's role in urging authorities to stick by Constitution and laws.

President Yameen asserted that it was the duty of the state head as the highest government authority to ascertain the transparent and unbiased conduct of police and military of a country, adding the necessity of assuring the citizens of integrity and honesty from authorities responsible for protecting civil rights.

He also stressed that unlike the country's Anti Corruption Commission, Maldives Police Service cannot be classified as an independent body.

His stiff remarks has come amid opposition's rallying lambastes directed towards Maldives Police Service, questioning the integrity and transparency of the department. Many of the opposition's elite figures and activists had chastised Maldives Police Service of getting embroiled in politics and department officials split between political ideologies.

The anti-government sentimentalists have furthermore alleged the authority officers coming under influence of political elites and the President himself.

It would appear that the root Police Service directed with harsh criticism from opposition originated after President's Office Spokesperson clarified officers proceeded to arrest Dhiggaru constituency lawmaker Ahmed Faris Maumoon two days after his release on 'loud' order of President Yameen.

Court order on Faris Maumoon's arrest through signed arrest warrant was issued around the dawn of Friday, approximately timed at 04:00hrs while his arrest officially was made about 16:00hrs on Saturday afternoon.

PO Spokersperson Muaz Ali had confirmed to media of President's order on police to arrest MP Maumoon prior to court order.
