Bribery case of ex-VP proceeds in discretion

Trial of state pressed charge against former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb for bribing Intelligence Department of Maldives Police Service proceeded in discretion on Tuesday.

The hearing scheduled for 11:00hrs on Tuesday morning was kept discreet without addressing the reason for it.

Usually case hearings at courts proceed in discretion upon request from Prosecutor General of if the case relates to the sensitivity of national security.

State is attempting to try the former VP for bribing government officers - Intelligence Department officers of Police Service - and misuse of official designation.

The once popular ruling-party affiliated Vice President was earlier tried for nine different charges related to the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) scandal. He is alleged to have embezzled funds from a state-owned corporation. Adeeb is charged for misusing designation to grant personal gain.

The former VP is alleged of underselling several island properties to favoring parties which resulted in a state loss of MVR 50,000 and more from nine different islands.

Adeeb was convicted of plotting the assassination of President Abdulla Yameen, possession of an unwarranted firearm and the embezzlement of state funds through MMPRC. He was sentenced a 33 year jail term.
