Deposed lawmaker of Dhan'gethi constituency Ilham Ahmed has affirmed of his arrival to Maldives 'soon' and will cooperate with the Maldives Police Service regarding their investigations.
Not long after the opposition initiated no-confidence motion of parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh fell into the cracks, MP Ahmed flew abroad - self exiling him to Laos, Thailand. MP Ahmed is listed among the 42 parliamentarians who signed on the no-confidence motion.
The lawmaker had tweeted on Wednesday saying authorities had visited his family back in Maldives despite having full knowledge of he was residing currently - indirectly describing the move as an attempt to intimidate Ahmed's family to coerce him to fly back sooner.
Officers who visited Ahmed's residence in Male' had insisted on meeting his wife after receiving confirmation of his exact whereabouts. Authorities had not disclosed their intention of attempting to meet with MP Ahmed's family members.
"I assure you that I will fly back to Maldives soon and will answer to all the questions raised by authorities. But until then I advice authorities to refrain from harassing and intimidating my family, which truly is an utterly degrading act," Ilham Ahmed said on Wednesday.
Police Service was unavailable to comment on the matter.
