Police hold MP Faris summon to court, cancels trial hearing

Trial hearing of Dhiggaru constituency lawmaker Ahmed Faris Maumoon, scheduled for Sunday has been cancelled as police had held summoning him to court.

The overseeing judge of the case, Ali Adam has cancelled the case which was scheduled for Sunday morning. Reporters had registered to witness the trial, however police restricting MP Maumoon's transition to court on Sunday had prevented this.

Criminal cases will not proceed in absentia of the defendant, with the exemption of special situations.

A summon order to MP Maumoon has been issued after Supreme Court had declared the release of him along with several other prominent political leaders. Top court declared Faris Maumoon's trial was under state influence, and ordered authorities to release him immediately.

Meanwhile advocates representing Faris Maumoon has claimed that government's inaction to release the lawmaker after top-court had ruled as such, implies 'kidnapping' by state.
