Former president of Maldives Maumoon Abdul Gayoom had taken to authorities a case of attempted threatening on him on Sunday night.
Gayoom claimed on a tweet that a group of armed individuals had driven near his Male' residence - Maafannu Endherimaage - on Sunday night, with loud banters and threats aimed at him. The former head of state states the individuals were all armed with knives.
Though it is clear that the individuals had not gained access to his residence, Gayoom had requested from both defense force and police to investigate the matter and take action against the ones responsible.
Since the Thursday night order from Supreme Court citing release of as many as nine political prisoners had erupted the country's political tension to an all-time high since 2015. While 72 hours had elapsed with the government affirming defiance to the top-court order, attorney general Mohamed Anil had maintained that the order will not be implemented without proper evaluation.
On Sunday morning, both defense force chief Major General Ahmed Shiyam and Police Chief Abdulla Nawaz affirmed they will not comply to Supreme Court order - referring to the top-court move for president's impeachment - and stated they will only act on attorney general's advice.
Thursday night's events had thrown Maldives into a further spiral of political unrest which had been brewing between ruling party and opposition movement for months.
