Maldives Police Service has initiated investigation of a video shared through social media platforms showing three individuals wearing the department's special operations uniform.
The individuals in the video appear wearing the said uniform and has concealed their identities with the use of balaclava masks. The individuals in the video warn they will overthrow government.
Police media official Ahmed Shifan on Wednesday confirmed that the video has been posted and shared multiple times on social media and they are currently looking into the matter. He also stressed that as of now it cannot be confirmed if the individuals appearing in the video are actual officers under Maldives Police Service.
The individuals warn through the video message to government authorities to cease their attempts to politicize the police department and had continued stating the failure to do so will be met with repercussions.
Furthermore the 'officers' appearing in the video had also claimed that the government's failure to fulfill their demands would be met with an uprising by police officers on April 1.
The island nation has been embroiled in fresh political turmoil after the Supreme Court on February 1 ordered the immediate release of jailed political leaders including self-exiled former president Mohamed Nasheed.
Since February 1 the police department had seen two of its commissioners getting sacked on immediate terms while the rumors have spread both defense force as well as police department are currently under the command of Maldives National Defense Force's Major General Ahmed Shiyam.
Amidst the ongoing unrest several officers were arrested and taken into detention over undisclosed allegations and await interrogation.
Meanwhile ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) members claim that the opposition leaders had on multiple times attempted to create rifts within the security departments. Former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom is charged with a similar offense among many other.
