Nasheed condemns attack on ruling party camp

Self-exiled former president Mohamed Nasheed on Sunday condemned the arson attack on a ruling party camp in the capital Male.

According to the party's youth wing president Ibrahim Yoosuf, two individuals had attempted to gain access to the premises around 04:30hrs - early hours of Sunday. The still unknown alleged arsonists was intervened by the on-site security officer but was then threatened by the individual.

The individuals had then set the stage at the camp ablaze after dousing the floor carpet and the podium area with petrol.

"The stage and its podium along with the backdrop are all made from wood. While the deck had been untouched barely from the fire, the entire stage and podium has been burned down," Yoosuf said.

Following the attack, Nasheed took to Twitter to condemn the attack stressing on the need for peaceful political activities.

The youth wing president had further claimed the arsonists attempted to gain access to the first floor of the party camp where social media activists and campaigners of the party operate, however was blocked due to the iron-gate which grants access to the floor.

Yoosuf had claimed the camp - Rumaalu 2 - has operational CCTV cameras and footage from the surveillance cameras have been provided to Maldives Police for investigation.
