Nasheed commences 'Eurotrip', aims to discuss politics

Former president of Maldives Mohamed Nasheed, who has been in neighboring Sri Lanka has commenced a trip to visit European countries.

Foreign Minister under Nasheed's administration, Ahmed Naseem - who is also a relative of the former head of state - tweeted on Monday stating that the ex-president aims to meet with the leaders of European nations to engage in dialogue.

Though Naseem confirmed the self-exiled former president is on his way to meet European leaders, his tweet made not revelation of the exact countries Nasheed is set to visit.

Nasheed was convicted of terrorism under incumbent president Abdulla Yameen's administration and was sentenced to prison for 13 years.

However he sought sanctuary from United Kingdom after fleeing Maldives, stating the requirement of immediate medical attention. Since then he had been living in a self-imposed exile at UK, but the sudden blow of political upheaval at Maldives drew him close to home - and flew to Lanka to better assess the critical situation.

While at Lanka Nasheed met with a number of dignitaries from the opposition to discuss politics and find solutions for the then intensified condition in the island nation.
