The state attorney at Attorney General's Office who voiced disapproval regarding the state of emergency extension by the parliament has resigned from her designation.
The news first spread last month when it was reported that several lawyers at Attorney General's Office were against the extension of the initial state of emergency by additional 30 days - which was approved by parliament through what is widely regarded as a contentious vote.
Mariyam Shunana, the state attorney at the office was the first to vocally address her disapproval to the state's decision to lengthen the emergency.
In her statement she urged the Maldives government to end the emergency adding the extension of it had been unconstitutional.
Furthermore she added an emergency must not be employed as a tool to suspend the rights granted under Article 255 - limitations of the declaration - of Maldives Constitution.
Shunana in a tweet confirmed her tenure at the Attorney General's office has come to an end. Her decision to resign from the office had been difficult given her 10 years of service, she added in her tweet.
Though it is certain the state attorney had given her formal resignation the reasons for it is still undisclosed.
